10/7/2015: Above New Updated Photo with Motac Mitigation 11″ Custom Rail and Primary Arm 3X Magnifier:
After asking Dewey Hockett about a gazillion questions both on Facebook and in person, we finally decided on the specs for my 300 Blackout AR Pistol Build. This was going to be the 1st AR I put together “from scratch”.
The plan was I would put the lower together myself(and proceed to ask another 1000 questions during that process) and Dewey would put together an upper based on my budget.
Initial Lower Parts List:
Spiked Punisher Lower Stripped
Motac Solutions Lower Parts Kit (LPK)
POF (Patriot Ordnance Firearms) EFP Enhanced Finger Position Drop In Trigger Single Stage 4.5lbs
Generic Stippled AR Grip
Enhanced Punisher Trigger Guard
Thordsen AR Pistol Buffer Tube Kit with Cover with CAA Saddle
Initial Upper Parts Kit:
Texas AR 30 Caliber Muzzle Brake
Generic 9.5″ Handguard Rail (Leftover from previous AR)
Crappy Generic 3×9 Scope (Leftover from previous AR)
So it Begins!
It all begins with the lower. I intended to have my 6 year old help me assemble the lower. In the beginning, he barely had any interest in this hunk of metal but that changed as the project progresses and he began realize what we were building!
First up the POF EFP Trigger. I have a Geissel GS2 2 Stage in my other AR and wanted to try both something that was different and a drop in for ease of install(with my son). Also it comes with 1st gen KNS Anti-Walk pins.
As you can imagine this drop install is pretty painless compared to something the GS2. My little helper did a great job as well.
And this phase is complete!
*Pro Tip: If you are doing with your son or daughter, I recommend doing in 15 minute spurts especially with younger kids so they don’t lose focus.
Next up we did the Safety, Magazine Release and Take Down Pins(Watch out for flying springs!) in preparation for the Pistol Buffer Tube assembly from Thordsen.
I picked the Thordsen setup over the Sig Brace for two reasons: 1. it was cheaper 😉 and 2. I wanted something a little different.
Now that we have a complete lower it’s time to attach the Upper that Dewey Hockett assembled for me
Took it to Lone Star Gun Range in Lockhart and it performed flawlessly. Didn’t appreciate the crappy scope hitting me in the head, so I ordered a Holosun HS403A off of Amazon. Also added a WF502B flashlight, Magpul K2 Grip and a Lancer Translucent 20 Round Magazine(read good reviews about it working with 300 Blackout ammo)
The Holosun HS403A comes with a high mount and a low mount. The high mount gives you lower 1/3 co witness. I wanted to drop this down to absolute co-witness so I installed it on the base low mount on top of a UTG Medium risers. I also purchased a Primary Arm Extended Eye Relief 3X magnifier that I wanted to use on this 300 and my other AR with an Eotech 512(also absolute co-witness).
I re sighted in the Holosun to 50 yards at best of the best. Just waiting on the Primary Arms Magnifier to arrive!
I have to say I put down about 250 rounds of Ozark 300 147grain ammo and another 100 rounds of Fiocchi 300 ammo without a single issue!
I will update this post when I get the PA 3X installed and head back to the range!
